annual camping trip
i was really nervous for our pennebaker-kreitlow camp trip this year. we had booked a spot at a campground back in FEBRUARY in sequim, a few hours (including a ferry ride) away. when the weekend finally came, things were not looking great. both matt's had taken friday off work, so we could get the weekend started early and avoid traffic getting there. it was pouring (pouring!) rain, BUT there was also a burn ban since this has been our driest, hottest summer on record. except for this particular weekend, of course. the ferry route we needed to take had a ferry out of service and was running hours behind. we decided to drive to a different ferry terminal in seattle (way out of our way... on both ends) and our car died just as we were supposed to be driving onto the ferry! and it died AGAIN on the ferry. traffic was terrible once we got off the ferry and our two hour, get there by 2:00 drive, had turned into a six hour, got there at 6:00 excursion. ack, right? BUUUUUUT... as soon as we pulled up at the campground, the rain stopped. and it didn't rain at all while we were there. and we stopped at rei and bought a propane fire pit, so we still had a campfire, but with no smoke! and the campsite was SO well maintained and beautiful. our site was overlooking the water. and we got everything set up and dinner made before it got dark and thank goodness it seemed our luck had changed. the rest of the trip was so good. we went to the olympic game farm (that gets its own post) which was insane, saw bioluminescent plankton in the puget sound by our campsite which was also insane, and hiked, and ate, and beach combed, and caught tiny crabs, and had pretty much the best trip. i almost called it off at least thirty times trying to get there because things were just not going well and i was sure that we were going to get mauled by bears at the rate we were going, but i'm so glad we pushed through! because, hello? bioluminescent plankton!
